A VR Tour of Antarctica

The Bark Europa sailing through the Antarctic peninsula

Since we are all in lock-down, thanks to the global pandemic, I thought I’d finally get around to finishing a project I’ve had on the back burner for a year or so: A 360 video tour of Antarctica.

For now, I won’t go into the details of how this was made — that’s for another blog post. Suffice to say this little tour features over 11G of video (uncompressed, it’s closer to 200G) presented using the #webvr framwork, A-Frame. It should work on your phone, your desktop computer and quite possibly, VR headsets.

There are penguins, British and Ukrainian bases, a partially sunken ship and even a leopard seal underwater if you hunt around enough!

Some of the scenes are a bit silly, some are hastily shot and need cleaning up, whereas others are just quietly beautiful. It’s a no-frills website and could certainly use a little improvement but hopefully, this will put a few smiles on some faces during this difficult time.
